Technical/Operational Committee

GPA's Technical/Operational Committee is composed of six working sections - each focusing on a specific technological discipline. This committee has provided virtually all of the technical standards applicable to gas processing operations, custody transfer and measurement.

This committee (sections included) meets twice each year, in conjunction with the GPA Convention and in the fall.

Technical Committee Sections

Section A - Facilities Design & Optimization I Section B - Analysis & Test Methods
Section C - Product Specifications I Section F - Technical Data Development
Section H - Product Measurement and Handling I Section M - Operations and Maintenance

Section A - Facilities Design & Optimization
  • Responsible for all technical matters concerning gathering and processing facilities design

  • Maintains a continuing study of all phases of gas processing and gathering facilities design (process, mechanical, civil, structural, electrical, instrumentation) including construction, startup, process safety management design related issues, optimization, and modification

  • Excludes determination of basic data, analysis, and computer applications, but does include on stream process analysis and computers as applied to plant control instrumentation

  • Member companies assign individuals who have job responsibilities which involve them in the design of gas gathering and processing facilities

  • Recent publications of this section include three very helpful documents for the design and plant engineer: Plant Project and Design Checklist, Performance Testing of Plant Equipment and Energy Conservation Checklist

Section B - Analysis & Test Methods
  • Develops analytical procedures and test methods that are needed by the gas gathering and processing industry

  • Issues all of the industry's sampling procedures, specifications test methods, and analytical methods

  • Current emphases include perfection of extended analysis methods for both gas and liquids

  • This section has developed gas chromatography methods for trace contaminants and stages the annual GPA School of Gas Chromatography

  • Members with appropriate job responsibilities and/or expertise (i.e. lab personal) either volunteer or are assigned by a member company

Section C - Product Specifications
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining product quality specifications for LP-Gas and natural gasoline and monitoring and commenting on specifications for natural gas and CNG

  • Have developed all U.S. specifications and many international specifications for LP-Gas

  • Current emphasis of this group is the identification, test methods, and possible control of rare, but possible, NGL contaminants such as ammonia, carbonyl sulfide, and fluorides

  • Developed 2140, D-1835, 3132, etc.

  • Members with appropriate job responsibilities and/or expertise either volunteer or are assigned by a member company

Section F - Technical Data Development
  • Responsible for monitoring the availability and reliability of thermodynamic and physical property data that are needed to design and operate gas processing facilities

  • When a need for data is identified, they develop and supervise research projects to obtain the needed data

  • Evaluates new correlations and new computer models for calculation of thermodynamic and physical properties data for the gas processing industry

  • Staffed by technical specialists who had some experience directing
thermophysical property research within their companies

Section H - Product Measurement and Handling
  • Work alone and/or in coordination with other organizations and individuals that are involved in NGL and gas measurement

  • Surveys and meets the needs of the gas processing industry for technical information, procedures, and standards relating to:
    • measurement
    • sampling
    • safe handling of natural gas and natural gas liquids

  • Members with appropriate job responsibilities and/or expertise either volunteer or are assigned by a member company

Section M - Operations and Maintenance
  • Serves as a forum for personnel involved in operations and maintenance of gas gathering and processing facilities to share and improve their practices and procedures

  • Maintains a list of topics identified to consider addressing (such as preventive maintenance programs, plant turnarounds, and vendor alliances)

  • Members with appropriate job responsibilities and/or expertise either volunteer or are assigned by a member company

We're already planning for the 2011 GPA Convention. Mark your calendars!

April 3 - 6, 2011
San Antonio, Texas

If you are interested in being a speaker at next year's GPA Convention, please remember that the deadline to submit your abstract (to jdreyer@GPAglobal.org) for consideration is Sept. 1, 2010. Presentations will cover topics in gas processing, gas gathering, fractionation, storage and transportation. Learn more.
