Bob Dunn, President
|
Jean Leger, Chair
|
GPA President Bob Dunn, Prism Gas Systems, and head of the convention's Program Committee, Jean Leger, OGE Energy Corp., have taken a few minutes to tell us what you can expect at GPA's 89th annual convention.
The theme "Advocates in Action" can have many meanings to such
a diverse group of attendees as this, who represent a variety of midstream companies
from around the world. Why was it chosen and what is the primary focus behind
it for the 2010 GPA Convention?
Dunn: GPA has just adopted a new mission statement that reflects the transformation
we have made over the last few years from representing the gas processing industry
to representing the midstream industry. GPA is the logical group to step up
to the plate to serve midstream as a whole because the industry's gathering
companies, treating companies and other related businesses operate in similar
environments to our longtime traditional membership. Our association is now
effectively representing the midstream industry in Washington D.C. and selected
key states to the benefit of all member companies worldwide. Proof is in the
new climate change legislation that includes GPA's timely and constructive interaction.
Member companies' volunteers are involved in everything GPA does, so if we work
in this industry, we are all "Advocates in Action."
Leger: The Program Committee, in support of the new mission statement, designed this year's convention program around fully equipping attendees with the latest in information, research and training to help their companies best address issues and realize opportunities throughout the broad spectrum of the midstream industry. I'm confident that any company - small, medium or large - will benefit from convention participation in the agenda that is relevant to all matters in natural gas gathering, processing and treating; natural gas storage and intrastate transportation; and natural gas liquid transportation, fractionation and storage.
During these challenging economic times we're in and with ever-tightening
travel budgets, how can employees justify the expenses to their respective companies
to attend this professional conference?
Dunn: In my opinion, industry companies can't afford not to have employees
attend. GPA is a very cost-effective organization and its convention is a great
return on investment. At the Austin venue, you'll find current research information,
the latest concerns and actions in state and federal legislative matters, a
wealth of shared resources and exposures to other companies' experts
all contributing to build your knowledge about the critical factors toward determining
your company's future. Without a doubt, this is the single most important gathering
in the world for the midstream industry. Here you can meet, share and learn.
Leger: Remember, the Program Committee is made up of a diverse group of individuals representing several businesses and interests from within the midstream industry. As a result, convention programs are timely, relevant and extremely informative to the key topics and issues. In a time when many companies are cutting back on training and/or other usual learning investments, the convention serves as an extremely focused, cost-effective alternative for keeping up with critical tools, resources and information. Our goal is to pack a large amount of information and activities into a busy few days to maximize benefits and minimize investments in time and expenses.
From your perspective, who benefits most from attending the convention -
first-time attendees or senior level employees?
Dunn: No doubt, all attendees benefit. For example, the Young Professionals
have developed an excellent program for those who are early in their careers.
However, longtime industry professionals can gain a lot also from the sessions
and interaction opportunities. This is one of the industry's largest gatherings
of our senior people in one place. Just think about what can come from being
around that much experience.
Leger: The Program Committee has designed a convention to provide benefit and value to all attendees, but this is absolutely a must-attend for those new in their midstream careers. We have a special focus on the young professionals knowing that they are our future. Sunday's schedule provides them professional development and networking opportunities, followed by technical training on Monday afternoon.
What were you looking for when you selected Robert Bryce as the General
Session keynote speaker this year?
Leger: True to our Advocates in Action theme, we sought an industry perspective
on the continuing call for U.S. energy independence that at times demonizes
fossil fuels. Mr. Bryce, a journalist specializing in energy issues, has a reputation
for speaking freely about the energy independence concept and the most popular
technologies currently being promoted to achieve it. His messaging has proposed
that for the foreseeable future, the next 30 to 50 years, fossil fuels will
reign supreme and that the sooner the U.S. discards the rhetoric about energy
independence and accepts the reality of our interdependence, the more secure
and prosperous it will be. It promises to be a thought-provoking opening to
the convention.
In your opinion, what are the most important take-aways for attendees to
leave the convention with in order to realize the maximum benefits from their
time in Austin?
Dunn: There are so many, where do I start? Because opportunities abound, I do
encourage each registrant to study the convention program in advance, highlighting
the items most beneficial to his or her job and company. Then be sure to attend
the General Session for even more insight as to critical topics and what will
follow over the next few days. At a minimum, every attendee should take advantage
of networking opportunities, get updated on key issues, learn from the technical
sessions and re-focus on workplace safety. Also, to assure your voice in GPA
matters going forward, don't leave Austin without having volunteered to serve
the association in some capacity and become an "Advocate in Action."
